Settling in India

Bangalore City

Situated at an altitude of 920 meters above sea level, Bangalore is the principal administrative, cultural, commercial and industrial center of the state of Karnataka. The city, which is spread over an area of 2190 square kilometers, enjoys a pleasant and equable climate throughout the year. Its tree-lined streets and abundant greenery have led to it being called the 'Garden City' of India. However, since local entrepreneurs and the technology giant Texas Instruments discovered its potential as a high-tech city in the early 1980s, Bangalore has seen a major technology boom. It is now home to more than 250 high-tech companies. Including homegrown giants like Wipro and Infosys. Consequently, now Bangalore is called the 'Silicon Valley' of India.

Climate

Bangalore city is located in the southern part of the state of Karnataka, in the southern region of India. It is 3,113 feet (949 m) above sea level, on top of a ridge in the Karnataka plateau. Bangalore is 998 km from Mumbai (Bombay) and 562 km from Hyderabad.

Religions and Festivals

Bangalore celebrates regional, national and religious festivals like other parts of the country.

Yugadi :(March or April) The Kannadiga new year day of Yugadi that falls on the second half of March or early April is celebrated with devotion and delight.

Karaga :(March or April) is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony at the Dharmaraya Temple. The Karaga, an earthen pot that stands for the goddess Shakti, is taken out in a procession at night. The pot is immersed in the Sampangi Tank, which is 20 km from the city of Bangalore. (The sakti is worshipped as Draupadi, the daughter of Fire). To test their strength of character, devotees balance pots on their heads. In the main temple procession, held on a full-moon night, a priest dressed as a woman also carries a pot on his head. The procession includes a number of flower covered floats or carts and is certainly worth a photo.

Dussehra (September-October) The pride of Karnataka's festivals is Dossers and lasts for ten days. The rulers of Vijayanagara Empire used to celebrate Dussehra with remarkable brilliance and the rulers of Mysore continued the tradition. It is a unique and significant festival of the Hindus.

Kadalekeya Parishe (November or December) also known as the Groundnut Fair is held once a year at the Bull Temple. This festival is held by the local farmers to show their gratitude to the Nandi bull for staying away from their groundnut production, many years ago. A colourful festival including a ground nut competition it is worth seeing if you are in the area at the time.

National Festivals and Holidays Bangalore also celebrates the national festivals of Independence Day, the Republic Day and Gandhi’s Birthday. Religious festivals like Makara Samkramana, Sri Ramanavami, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Deepavali, Christmas, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha etc. are also celebrated and can prove exciting

Music of the Bangalore City Musicians

Bangalore had it's own charm, being a Military Cantonment in the Colonial days, there were good chances that many musicians settled here to play in the Brass Bands, both at dances as well as in the Band-stands that can be found at Cubbon Park and Lalbaugh, apart from duties in the Regiment of performing for a March, Drill Parade, or just to keep the troops going! Guess, many of the talents were handed down from generation to generation, but basically it was a spirit of music in Bangalore that surfaced all the time.

The commercial invasion of music for the "generation", it's a mind-blowing experience, and a lot of hard cash, so one would think that music is for the rich, even if the talent could lie with the poor! But the 'vibes' are so strong.

Resorts and Spas

India, the land of beauty, has combined health and beauty. As a result, spa holidays have become popular here these days. House

Setting up a home in Bangalore can be a challenging experience, but comfortable accommodation can be arranged most anywhere.  A recent building boom, and the emergence of a moneyed middle class, has meant that good to excellent housing is widely available.  If you're a foreigner you cannot own land so you'll be renting a place.

In larger centers, you may even have a choice between furnished and unfurnished places, and short or longer-term rentals.  If you are here for a comparatively short time, the furnished option may be attractive, though you may have little choice in the style of décor.  Even if you are getting your own place, a short-term rental may be preferable to staying in a hotel for a few weeks while your place is found and kitted out.  Finding a place with a telephone already installed, and/or a cooking gas connection, is also useful.  Getting these basic amenities hooked up can be trying.

The rental process

The rental process is usually straightforward.  Houses are rented to companies or individuals on an 11-month basis (avoids legalities) with a lease agreement.  A rental deposit is standard and is unusually high by Western standards.  It varies with the city, the standard of housing, and the rental demand.  For example, the deposit expected equals 10 months of rent in Bangalore but only 2 or 3 months in Hyderabad.  The lease usually specifies an annual increase of, say, 10 percent.

In Bangalore you would we looking at Rs 15,000 to 30,000 if you were conveniently located in the Cantonment area.  Detached houses would be Rs 50,000 to 100,000.  The real kicker is the 10 months deposit most people want. It is not a cheap place to live

The Promised Land

If you live to eat, this is the Promised Land. Japanese, Greek, Persian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Parsee are as familiar to the palate, as are Chinese, Thai and Italian. The restaurants catering to these cuisines are respectful of insatiable appetite for fine food that is served with taste and decency, not to mention theology and geometry.

Haven’t read it? Haven’t lived then, have you? Can man live by bread alone? Not unless it is topped by the cheese of excess. But, Bangaloreans wouldn’t do for a wild party that goes on into the AM where one can commit the sins that good memories are made of, and accompanied by the wine of good taste.

Cuisine

The diversity of the cousine available, is, reflective of the social and economic diversity of Bangalore. Roadside vendors, tea stalls, South Indian, North Indian, Chinese and Western fast food are all very popular in the city. Udupi restaurants, are very popular and serve predominantly vegetarian cuisine. The Chinese food and the Thai food served in most of the restaurants are customized to cater to the tastes of the Indian population.

Some of the renowned traditional Bangalore vegetarian restaurants are MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room), Vidyarthi Bhavan, Udupi Krishna Bhavan, Ramakrishna Lunch Home, New Krishna Bhavan, Janatha Hotel, Central Tiffin Room etc.

Restaurants at Janardhana Hotel and Chalukya Hotel and Ullas to name a few. The masala dosa - rice pancake smeared with red chilly chutney and stuffed with potato curry, 'set dosa' - 3 medium sized dosas, 'benne masalae' - thick rice pancake prepared with butter - are some of the local favorites and few stake the origin of these dishes from Bangalore. Bisi Bele Bath, Rava Idli, the spicy Uppittu/Uppuma - served as Khara Bath in most of the restaurants are some of the other local favorites. Some of the bakeries in Bangalore are also quite popular for a quick snack.

Pubs and Clubs

The restaurants in Bangalore are second to none, what the city is really famous for are its pubs. Wherever you may be in Bangalore, a pub is usually just a stone's throw away.
